Botox injections are one of the most popular cosmetic treatments in the world. Popular with both women and men, demand is increasing year after year. In the UK more and more dentists carry out this and other facial procedures as routine in their practices. Dentists have trained extensively in the head and neck region with great detail given to the muscles involved in Botox treatments. Now over 25% of dentists in the UK incorporate Botox treatments in their daily practice, and with the added confidentiality of attending a dental practice for these treatments patients seem to enjoy this added benefit.
Botox is made from ‘botulinum toxin’, a substance produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. In small quantities, however, Botox merely interrupts nerve impulses to muscles in the face. Therefore prevents targeted muscles from producing forehead lines, frown lines between the eyes, smile lines (crow’s feet) as well as other facial lines caused by muscle contraction.
